An experimental, expert systems, constrained recogniser using feature duration

Abstract The syntactic approach is used to recognise isolated words using the order and duration of voiced, voiceless, and silence features. Information is generated on the type and strength of contrasts between words which illustrated certain durational rules, in order to assess the usefulness of these features for recognition purposes. The system is written so that it may be readily augmented to include features in addition to duration, without re-writing the recogniser rules.
