7 Logistic discrimination

Publisher Summary This chapter introduces the ideas of logistic discrimination between two groups and considers iterative maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters postulated. An example of the method applied to diagnosis in medicine is provided in the chapter. The extensions of the method: quadratic logistic discrimination, bias reduction in the estimation method and logistic compound methods for discriminant updating and estimating mixing proportions are discussed in the chapter. The k- group logistic discrimination is introduced in the chapter and develops along the lines established for two groups. The chapter describes applications of the methods outside discrimination, mentions some new work and some comparisons made with other discriminant methods.
