Structured neural networks in nature and in computer science

Recent advances in several disciplines have led to rapidly growing interest in massively parallel computation. There are considerable potential scientific and practical benefits from this approach, but positive results will be based on existing knowledge of computational structures, not on mystical emergent properties of unstructured networks.
