In this paper, an Antonini-wavelet-based image compression method of terrain using SPIHT is proposed. Initially Antonini9/7 wavelet basis is adopted for its predominance in compressing terrain data, then the coefficients of them are optimized; later, on the base of SPIHT algorithm, a multi-scale compression method of terrain is presented, which codes the terrain with higher quality in the ROI region and with lower quality in the background. Experimental results show that Antonini9/7 wavelet basis has a higher image compression quality than other common orthogonal wavelet bases, and PSNR is improved to some extent by optimizing coefficients of Antonini9/7 wavelet basis. On the other hand, a multi-scale compression method can not only keep the ROI region with higher quality, but also make the terrain data adapted for local processing and network transmission.
