Cutoff Rate Analysis of the Gauss-Markov Fading Channel with Binary Inputs and Partial CSI at the Receiver

We use cutoff rate to study the rate- optimal binary input distributions for use on the Rayleigh fading channel when only partial CSI is avail- able at the receiver. First, we consider iid fading, and analyze the cutoff rate under partial CSI for BPSK and On-Off Keying (OOK) modulation. Then, we analytically determine the optimal distribution as a function of the faded SNR and the CSI quality avail- able at the receiver. Lastly, we consider a temporally- correlated Gauss-Markov fading model, and discuss attainable rates for this channel when a PSAM es- timation scheme is combined with adaptive binary modulation based on the CSI quality available at the receiver.
