THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF SEMICONDUCTOR RIB WAVEGUIDES.

Three waveguide structures with different properties have been analysed using the effective index method, the finite difference method and a function fitting method. The effective index method is quick and easy to use and gives reasonable accuracy for two of the structures, and good accuracy for the third. Using the finite difference method very good accuracy can be attained for all structures; however, the level of accuracy is a function of mesh size and so of computer time.
